Linear Aeration Research, as well as personal experience, shows that injuries to humans, like lameness from horses, are mainly due to a lack of consistency in the soil compaction level of turf surfaces. Some findings indicate that one fifth of all human sports injuries are related to the roughness/compaction of turf surfaces found on athletic fields and sports arenas.
Studies say that a well maintained turf (with properly managed soil-water content, soil density and turf cover) can positively reduce the number of sports injuries. Also, the practice of adding soil amendments and treating the turfgrass with linear aeration once or twice a year will change the soil conditions and soften the field surfaces. Soils with a high density (compaction) and a small turf growth have hard surfaces, whereas fields and sports arenas that have been linear aerated are definitely softer. Parents, just like horse trainers, should insist that good turf maintenance be practiced on all sports turf areas, including linear aeration and the addition of natural soil amendments.
